My last experience of long johns were the prickly beige ones we got in the army. These ones are form fitting and thin so you can get trousers over them easily. Their performance was appreciated on our recent motorcycle trip to the Himalayas. Wore them every day for a week and no smell. I love that they are made in NZ from NZ wool.

The long johns are warm and good quality. The fit won’t suit everyone. They’ll fit best if you have long slim legs and a small bum otherwise they bunch up on the legs, pull down at the back and can be somewhat constricting on thicker legs.

On the plus side, this is a high quality garment which is warm and comfortable to wear and washes well by handwash or machine delicates cycle. I would normally order size M but I have found that merino clothing is very slim fit so I ordered size L and it fits well. Most merino clothing on the market is made in China which raises serious ethical doubts about the treatment of labour and animals, so being made in NZ is a big plus. On the negative side, the lack of a fly opening negates some of the convenience of the male anatomy when an open air comfort stop is needed on the hill but that would not put me off buying more from Smart Merino.

i'm 35" so normally get 36" size. due to not being slim, but muscly Calf's thighs and buttocks . and spend a most of the time seated in my wheelchair, i required lower back protection so decided to go next size up.

My height and body size determined a garment no, larger than XL.
However. The XL garments lasted no longer than one season without tears to the crotch area. So this season I have purchased XXL. These are looser fitting, just as warm as the XL, and only time will tell the last-ability of the garment. The Brass Monkey Marino Thermals are without a doubt the best brand I’ve purchased over many winters.

For the rather high price, you would have thought they would make long-johns for men with a fly, as a default, and without a fly (for those going to the South Pole) as an option. I wear long-johns because I have metal in my legs, and cold can be painful. So, I have sent them back and have bought some Merino wool long-johns from elsewhere, with fly, and cheaper. I have no idea if they will be the same quality.
