Smart Merino is a New Zealand family-owned and operated business making 100% merino clothing locally, founded in 2016. We run the business from a rural property in New Zealand, with a small team and direct relationships with the farms and manufacturers that produce our gear.
Who are Smart Merino?
Smart Merino is a Kiwi family business — Saphire, Chris, and three kids — running an online merino clothing store from a rural lifestyle block in New Zealand. We're not a corporate brand; we're a family operation that's spent more than a decade making merino clothing the way it should be made.
Our family has been in the wool and clothing business for over fifty years. Smart Merino itself launched as an online-only store dedicated to authentic, NZ-made merino. We chose online-only deliberately — it lets us keep margins reasonable, ship anywhere in the country at the same low rate, and avoid the markup of a retail middle layer.
What we make
Three sub-brands cover the full range:
- Brass Monkeys: our core 100% merino base layers, thermals, and accessories. Made in New Zealand. Used by police, frontline workers, skiers, hikers, and people who just want better warm clothing for everyday wear.
- Nature's Secret: women's merino camisoles, lace boxers, and underwear — feminine cuts in 100% merino.
- From Merino With Love: women's everyday merino pieces — long-sleeve tops, leggings, and lace spencers.
How we're different
Three things, in order:
- We make our core range in New Zealand. Most major merino brands started in NZ and moved manufacturing offshore years ago to cut costs. We didn't. We cover the reasoning in detail in our manufacturing standard article.
- We don't blend down. Our core merino is 100% merino — no cheap synthetic blends to reduce raw-material cost. When we do blend (for specific products with a specific purpose, like our Strong Wool Comfort range), we say exactly what's in it and why.
- We charge no rural delivery surcharge. Same shipping rates whether you're in central Auckland or on a back-country station. Free over $100 NZ/AUS, free over $/£/€150 internationally.
Where our wool comes from
Our merino comes from New Zealand high-country farms with established animal welfare standards. New Zealand banned mulesing decades ago, and our supply chain is traceable — we can tell you which region (and in some cases which farm) the wool in your garment came from.
Our strong wool, used in the Strong Wool Comfort range, is sourced from Cape Campbell Farm in Marlborough.
Why customers come back
Most of our growth has been word of mouth. The patterns we hear from returning customers:
- The garment lasts. Five-plus years of regular wear is normal for our base layers.
- The merino is genuinely soft — not the scratchy wool people remember from childhood.
- It works for use cases buyers didn't expect (we're told regularly that what was bought as ski gear ended up worn three days a week as everyday wear).
- Customer support is fast and personal. The person you email is one of a small team — not a call centre.
Frequently asked questions
Is Smart Merino a New Zealand company?
Yes — 100% Kiwi family-owned and operated, run from a rural property in New Zealand. We're not part of a larger corporate group.
Is Smart Merino's clothing actually made in New Zealand?
The core base-layer range is, yes. For specialised items where the best machinery for the job is overseas (technical socks, for example), we partner with global manufacturers but use only traceable NZ merino fibre. We label this transparently — see our manufacturing standard tiers.
How long has Smart Merino been around?
Smart Merino as an online business launched in 2016. The family behind it has been in the wool and clothing trade for more than fifty years.
Does Smart Merino ship internationally?
Yes — to most countries. Free shipping over $/£/€150 for international orders. No rural surcharges anywhere.
Can I trust customer reviews of Smart Merino?
Reviews are visible on individual product pages. We don't filter or remove negative reviews; if there's a problem with a product, we want to know about it. For independent reviews, search for Smart Merino on consumer review sites and outdoor-gear forums.
